In September 2019, Solomon Islands and the Republic of Kiribati surprised the world when they suddenly switched diplomatic relations from Taiwan to China. Both international political scientists and media in Japan had been putting out wrong information without knowing the basics of the Solomon Islands, and I was scratching my head.
I complained about an article by one such journalist, Kaori Fukushima, and to my surprise, she contacted me and said she wanted to learn about Melanesia.
Since Vanuatu of Melanesia is the subject of my first doctoral dissertation, I felt I had to make a move, so I invited Mr. Fukushima to start a one-year Melanesian Studies Group.
After a year had passed, I thought about closing the study group, but Mr. Fukushima asked me to continue it, and so it has remained.
Last month, in February 2023, Governor Suidani of Malaita Province, who had supported Taiwan in the Solomon Islands, was finally ousted, the Rabuka administration came to power in Fiji, putting an end to the Bainimaras, and in Papua New Guinea, a military agreement with the US and Australia was quickly advanced...
However, Japan, which invaded the region 80 years ago without knowing anything about it, remains at the same level.
We would like to promote Melanesian studies with Ms. Celien Pajon of a French research institute as a new advisor.

２０１９年９月、ソロモン諸島とキリバス共和国が突然台湾から中国に外交関係をスウィッチし、世界を驚かせました。日本国内の国際政治学者もメディアもソロモン諸島の基本を知らずに間違った情報を出しており、 頭を抱えていました。
その一人ジャーナリストの福島香織さんの記事にクレームをつけたところ、なんと本人から連絡がありメラネシアを学びたいとのこと。
メラネシアのバヌアツが私の一つ目の博士論文の対象地域なので、自分が動かなければと思い、福島さんを誘って１年限りのメラネシア研究会を立ち上げました。
１年が経過しこの研究会を閉じようと思いましたが福島さんから続けましょうとの声をいただきそのままです。
先月の2023年２月、ソロモン諸島で台湾を支持していたマライタ州スイダニ知事がいよいよ更迭され、フィジーではランブカ政権が誕生し、バイニマラ政権に終止符が打たれ、パプアニューギニアでは米豪との軍事協定が一気に進み・・
しかし、８０年前この地域の事を知らずに進出した日本のレベルはそのままです。
新たにフランスの研究所のCéline Pajon女史をアドバイザーに迎えメラネシア研究を進めていきたいと思います。
