1泊2日の綾部訪問の2日目は、早朝から四方源太郎府議が宿泊先のOriginまで車で迎えにきてくれた。
SuidaniさんとCelsusさんは日本滞在前半の東京での１週間の過密スケジュールに加え、京都移動直後の綾部での講演会を終え、疲れ切っていた。
四方府議は綾部の国宝。推古天皇の時代に聖徳太子が創建したと伝わる光明寺。その仁王門を案内いただいた
私など、京都に住んでいると、当然のように千年の歴史をもつ建造物が存在することに気も止めなくなるが、そういう建造物がないソロモン諸島の彼らにとって、印象に残ったようである。
自分達の島にも、アイデンティティとなる大きな建造物が必要であるという発言があった。
ソロモン諸島自体100前後の言語、すなわち民族がいるが、マライタ州の中にも14の言語すなわち民族がいる。近い言葉もあるが、全く違う言語もあるのだそうだ。
Suidaniさんがカラスマ的人気を得たのは、初めてマライタ州の津々浦々を訪問し、各村の人々と交流を持ったからである。日本で言えば神武東征みたいなことをしたのだ。
ソロモン諸島数千年の歴史の中で初めて、マライタ島が、そしてソロモン諸島が統一されようとしてる。
そのためのアイデンティティとしての歴史的、文化的建造物は重要かもしれない。

On the second day of the overnight visit to Ayabe, Gentaro Shikata, a prefectural councillor, picked us up early in the morning by car from our accommodation at Origin.
Hon Suidani and Mr Celsus were exhausted after a week of overscheduling in Tokyo during the first half of their stay in Japan, plus a lecture in Ayabe immediately after moving to Kyoto.
Mr Shikata showed us around Komyoji Temple, a national treasure in Ayabe, which is said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku in the reign of Emperor Suiko, and its Niomon Gate.
Living in Kyoto, I, for example, do not pay attention to the existence of thousand-year-old buildings as a matter of course, but for the Solomon Islanders, who have no such buildings, it seemed to have made an impression on them.
Some said that their islands also needed a large structure to give them an identity and a symbol.
The Solomon Islands itself has around 100 languages, or ethnic groups, and within Malaita Province there are 14 languages, or ethnic groups. Some of the languages are close, but others are completely different.
Hon. Suidani gained popularity in a charasmatic way because he was the first person to visit all parts of Malaita and interact with the people of the various villages. In Japan, he did something akin to the Jinmu expedition.
For the first time in the thousands of years of Solomon Islands history, Malaita and the Solomon Islands are about to be united.
Historical and cultural buildings may be important as symbols and identities for this.
