Melanesian Studies
Objective: How much do Japanese people know about the Melanesian region? The war history of Gadalcanal is well known, but nothing is known or researched about Melanesia in Japan, despite the fact that it has become a stage for international politics, such as the Solomon Islands riots in 2021, the independence movement of New Caledonia, and the intrusion of China. Melanesia is not unrelated to Japan in terms of pre-war immigration, wars, fishing and mining resources, and tourist attractions. The purpose of this project is to learn about Melanesia from a wide range of perspectives for a limited period of time.

Background
In 2017, Dr. Rieko Hayakawa was invited to speak at two parliamentary study groups. This lecture led to the addition of maritime security and island nations to the Abe administration's Indo-Pacific strategy (Security Diamond Initiative). This led to the launch of the Indo-Pacific Study Group in the fall of 2018. To date, we have been collecting and disseminating information with the cooperation of experts from around the world, and have also submitted many policy recommendations to the government. In addition to these activities, the group is also engaged in specific activities, such as providing judo uniform support to Palau in conjunction with the Maritime Self-Defense Force's deployment to the Indo-Pacific.
The Melanesian Studies Group is a subordinate organization of the Indo-Pacific Studies Group.
